In the heat of the moment

The heat begins! Preperations galore are the order of the day.

Peace Picnic is on the Hove Lawns in Brighton on the 20th July so getting geared up for that. Stages with multitudes of different acts musical, poetic wurd, healing areas, stalls and multi culti cuisine, Ethnic Village and performance stage, Film and Forum yurt, Kids area, bar and the open Sea to see! It is Brightons biggest freeist event so come down and enjoy with us. Programme to be launched on the www.peacemessenger.org.uk website June 30th. Also around Brighton we are launching a 12 page , recycled paper, vegetable inks Mag titled Peace Messenger which will have the whole site map and event programme. The Barn Gallery is set to be launched on the following weekend on July 26th. We are hosting an exhibition with local Brighton based artists along with the resident craftsmen working at the Barn. A luthier, glassblower and wood carver all work there and the event will be by invite only, (max 150) so if you are interested get in touch asap for details. There will be some live music, bar and food as well which we will not be publicising as it might attract too much interest!!!!! This is our party after a long haul clearing out the place, which we are now in the final stages of completing. The next step being a two weeks stint setting up for the launch Exhibition party. It is going to be a very cool affair and a one off that might only happen twice a year!! Keep checking the website in early July.

Some additional exciting projects are already underway where all Craftspeople combine their talents. One project is the construction of a hydrofoil watercraft utilising recycled materials. We are hoping to use around 80% recycled materials in the completed project and have created a design combining several others that have proved extremely successful. Those and the craft you can keep updated with on our Gallery page www.baobabstudios.com/gallery titled boats. It already has a mission to sail from Brighton to Biera in Mozambique in an a campaign for Justice and Freedom and is raising awareness and support for the peoples of Chikukwa who have created a magical success story in the mountains there. Turning a sad bleak eclological disaster into one amazing abundant permaculture based success story which is continually developing from strength to strength. We have some footage from there being edited right now, to be released along with the Barn launch. Website will have all links in early July.

One music based workshop we are going to be hosting is called 'Join the Jam'. This will be a session hosted by some accomplished musicians that fire up a two hour freeform jam session, who knows where it leads is anyones guess!! It is being held in Brighton to start with and may also have a slot at the barn occasionally. It is designed to include the participants who bring their instruments and plug in or bang or blow along with the core musicians. To experience this is a great thing and the idea is to introduce participants in the workshop to this live experience. It is primal after all, extremely uplifting and sometimes humiliating, haha, we all need to bash the ego sometime. There are no losers or bruises at the end of the day, well maybe on some drummers hands!! Will be generally advertised on the website and around Brighton areas again in early July.

Eish!!!

After an avalanche of editing days n nights we have gladly produced some new videos for all to enjoy on our youtube.com/baobabstudios channel. We have included Chiwoniso, Busi Ncube and Wilom Tight from Zimbabwe as we are part of the team trying to gain exposure and bookings for live performances. Oh yeah, they are also our mates and with Willom we are producing his album, 'Go Go Goi', a kick arse album we did together in a live n ready environment over a few sunny days in Zim, it worked and the energy was captured for all to soon enjoy. Also a quick thanks to Thulanis Steve Sparx for helping regain the hard-drive and sending it to us. We will be launching some promo tracks and clips soon. The Willom vid was recorded by Fusedroot during the Chimanimani Arts Festival '07 with a clip of one of the album tracks on the end. This is directly part of the way we work with a network of people to get things going, we are artists, techs and engineers etc creating a new way to move forward for the arts. Co-creation is the name of the game. Forward we go.
On the UK front there is preperations for all the coming Summer seasons activities, we get them in while we can!!! This means also getting all our promotions in order for the Festivals we are working with and trying to attract attention from. That has just been completed and we are sending out pretty much the same material online but on DVD with visual clarity and wicked sound!
Also under way is a new website that will be hosting a range of artists, projects, gallery, vids, music and an array of interesting arts based nourishment. We have just launched the new pic as the home page on which you have to press the Baobab tree to enter the existing site. This page will become an interactive page linking you to the relative arts of interest and the wurd. Taking a lot of effort to get this together so hopefully we are ready in February. Will keep you posted.

Tours and Festivals

Baobab over the last few weeks has been reflecting on the season in the K where we officially became involved in various Festivals, Exhibitons, Music projects and Workshops. Editing all the film and sound we captured is ongoing and new plans for the 08 season in the K are fast taking all the time! Baobab's Gary Redding was voted Chairman for the Peace Picnic held in Brighton each July and Baobab as a result will have a larger presence and responsibility at this event. 15000 attended this year which was such a great day, one of the only sunny weekends the whole summer, we only look forward to getting involved more and more.
On the sound front we are waiting for Willom Tights album on a hard drive to get here from Zim, with bated breath, which has been held by CAFT since it was recorded. Funny how things set up to help the Arts actually hinder it. Anyway forward we go. We just hope it is still working. Also we have recieved a copy of Tha Tha Ensembles new album titled, 'The Tonal Suite', wow, creative new style with a finely woven tapestry of sounds tailored to sooth the soul and lift the spirits. Rafael Berrios Exhibition and Workshop has kicked off at the Crawleys Hawth and Tilbury Park and carving workshops with local schoolkids is taking place each Thursday. Baobab is working with Rafael and will be developing his projects which will then be promoted to Festivals and Schools. We also work together at the barn gallery and workshop in Glynde.
Coming together is a new website where we will be able to display all the arts and the creators we are working closely with. It is a direct way for all to showcase their works and offer them in exchange for whatever is they dicate. Some artists are leaving that up to you, go Radiohead!!!! I particularly like it because it had the faith in humanity to at least give something in return and they did. Some do not even just expect money and you can offer whatever you like!! A fast changing World for sure. Most still prefer the paper stuff though!
The main focus for next year is to create a Zimbabwe Arts Festival in the K. Plans are already underway and various artists have already given us the thumbs up, keep watching this space.
